Matt’s been on the road, where he just installed a mobile at Mahtomedi Middle School near Minneapolis.

Since the school’s curriculum emphasizes engineering, the administrators wanted a little something that brought together the arts and the sciences.

The solution? A Calder-inspired mobile, designed just for them by our own resident engineer-turned-artist.

The 12-foot-by-12-foot mobile hangs from the 30-foot ceiling of the school’s atrium-style entryway. We hope it inspires plenty of creativity in the students!

Cool-Kids' Mobile

Here's a mobile we made recently for Cool-de-Sac, a kid's cafe/entertainment center in Miami. Although you can't really see the mobile in the context of the play area, you can see how we accomplished their request for bright sorbet-like colors:

Color Matching

Here’s a great example of a custom piece that required some very specific color matching. The interior designer we worked with sent a fabric swatch that contained several interwoven greens, blues, and turquoise hues. We found some great colors that highlighted the various shades, and–voila!–here’s the result:

Sneak Preview

Sorry for the brief absence. We’ve been busy working, playing, enjoying summer…and brainstorming a few new mobile ideas. Here’s a little sneak preview:

Custom Mobiles 101

One of our favorite things to do around here is promotional mobiles. We love seeing all the clever ways to incorporate mobiles into a marketing plan, event, press kit, or whatever.

When we work with clients on promotional mobiles here are a few things we’ll discuss with you up front:

  • Quantity. How many pieces are you going to need? Ten? Or ten thousand?

  • Timeframe. Are you going to need your mobiles in two weeks or two months?

  • Design. Did you have a design in mind? Or do you need us to design your mobile?

  • Budget. We’ve made promotional mobiles for just about every budget–from a couple bucks apiece to a couple thousand bucks apiece. We’ll work with your budget to determine materials, design complexity, packaging, and turnaround time.

SemiSwing in Singapore

We were excited to receive these photos today from recent Ekko Mobile recipient in Singapore.

The mobile, SemiSwing, hangs 10-feet tall with a 5-foot span at its widest point. Each of the semi-circular elements spins independently. The recipient strategically placed the mobile below an air conditioning vent, providing plenty of airflow for the freely moving mobile.

She selected the color scheme from a painting that hangs on the opposite wall. We think the mobile adds a lively splash of color to her neutral (and very lovely!) living room.
