Here’s a sculpture we’re creating for Pueblo Community College in Colorado. This piece is inspired by the Red Thread Ceiling Sculpture we created earlier this year. It will hang about 20 feet across. Stay tuned for updates!
Valley Children's Hospital Mobile
Matt and Ben trekked to Bakersfield, California last week to install this massive Mosaic-inspired mobile in the new Valley Children’s Hospital.
The mobile’s pieces were so large that instead of building and shipping an enormous crate, the guys rented U-haul and drove 865 miles south. (And just hours after they drove through, a portion of I-5 was shut down for six days, due to wildfires!)
The installation went smoothly, and we’re thrilled with how well the mobile works with the space. (And the guys were especially thrilled to fly home instead of drive.)
Completed Copper Mobile
This copper mobile is finished and headed to its owners in Seattle. We can’t wait to see pictures of it hanging in its final home!
Restaurant Ceiling Sculpture Materials
Next month, we’re traveling to Missouri to install this ceiling sculpture in a brand-new restaurant. We designed the sculpture to incorporate felt shapes, helping the restaurant’s acoustics by absorbing noise from the bar area. The felt shapes will have a wood backing, to provide structure, and we’ll create sets of mini-mobiles strung together to span the bar area. Stay tuned for installation pictures!
Future Mobile Maker?
Matt’s son came home from art camp yesterday, thrilled to share his creation—a stabile!
Copper Mobile Materials
We’re making headway on the copper mobile for a Seattle-area residence. We’re working with the clients to nail down the copper finishes that will be coordinate with their home. Here’s a peek at some options.
Massive Mobile Progress
We’re hyper focused on building this massive mobile for a children’s hospital in Bakersfield, California. The finished piece will hang about 20 feet tall by 20 feet wide, and you can see here how the shapes are monopolizing our shop space. Installation is in September, so stay tuned for final pictures!

Hervé Tullet Mobile
The mobile below was part of a really exciting collaboration with Hervé Tullet, children’s book author and illustrator extraordinaire (and definitely a favorite in the Richards household).
Hervé’s artwork is on exhibit at the Seoul Art Center, now through October. He wanted to include a hanging mobile among his creations, so several months ago, he reached out to Matt to collaborate. Here’s the Hervé Tullet-style mobile they designed and created together.
Ekko Workshop on Instinct
Recent text from Matt’s mom: “Is this one of Matt’s? It is on the show Instinct!”
Yes, yes it is! (And impressive eagle eyes, Matt’s mom!)
p.s. You can get one here!
Summer Road Trip 2018
It’s been a summer of working hard and playing equally hard. Matt and family just returned from an epic road trip that included time in Salt Lake City, the Uinta Mountains, Jackson, Wyoming, and Yellowstone. It was the perfect balance of hiking, swimming, wildlife sighting, and enjoying time with parents, siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Ok. Back to work!
