Matt’s daughter has been helping at the shop after school lately, which may have something to do with her generous gift of “snacks for your work.” (She knows her dad is good at sharing.)

Here’s the final color scheme for the Iowa Residence Mobile. This should look such a cheerful addition to the client’s entryway. Now we’re off to order some materials!
We’re working on a really interesting project for a private residence in California right now! It’s a mobile-chandelier hybrid that will hang over a dining room table. The mobile-chandelier will be able to expand to about twice its length, so it remains properly centered over the table as the clients expand their table for guests.
The renderings below show the contracted size and the fully expanded version.
This project has a lot of moving parts (literally and figuratively), and it’s been fun to design, research, and problem solve. It’ll be exciting to see it come together.
Here’s a rendering of a project we’re working on for a private residence in Iowa. We actually worked with this client nearly ten years ago designing and creating a mobile for his company’s corporate headquarters.
This will be a series of mobiles hung along the home’s entryway to create a canopy overhead. We’ll incorporate felt into the shapes, which helps soften acoustics in the space. We haven’t nailed down colors yet, so stay tuned for updates!
Here’s a prototype of the bird we’ll be using in the Kissimmee hospital project. They’ll be made of stainless steel for a nice shiny finish, and as you can see, Matt has zero patience for fingerprints.
Here’s another fun project in our queue. This ceiling sculpture will hang in a hospital on an American airbase in Korea. It will include 30 individual shapes strung together, and it will span about 20 feet tall by 20 feet wide. The design was intended to have a very organic, dynamic feel, reminiscent of coral, mossy trees, or tree branches blooming in spring. We’re looking forward to seeing this come together!
Now that travels have temporarily ceased, we’re getting hyper focused on a few upcoming projects. Here’s one we’re creating for a new hospital in Kissimmee, Florida. This will suspend from the ceiling of a waiting area. The birds range from 24- to 32-inches in wingspan, and together they’ll nicely fill the space.
After the installation at Vanderbilt, Matt and Ben headed straight to Houston for the second installation of the week. This series of ceiling panels was installed at a new cattery for Houston’s premier animal shelter and adoption center. The installation included 16 panels of 5 foot by 3 feet ovals, formed into convex and concave shapes. The panels were designed to represent a tree canopy.
The installation went smoothly—and no feline were present to aggravate Matt’s cat allergies. And Matt and Ben are looking forward to not traveling for the foreseeable future!
Matt and Ben returned from Disneyland and promptly returned to the airport for TWO back-to-back installations last week. The first was this paper chain people ceiling sculpture for the lobby of the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Everything went seamlessly, hallelujah, and we love how welcoming it looks from the entryway!
This summer marked ten years of Matt and Ben making mobiles together! To celebrate, they took a break from their installations—involving physically demanding 16-hour days—to visit Disneyland with their families, where they logged physically demanding 16-hour days. But nobody in this group minds 16-hour days that involve churros, dole whips, sunshine, and Splash Mountain on repeat.
